Amelia Erheart

Amelia Mary Earhart 1897-1937 

Atchison, Kansas

Amelia Earhart broke many records for women in the aviation industry.  Her first record was being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic in 1928 (two male pilots accompanied her on this flight.)  She was then the first woman and second person to solo fly over the Atlantic in 1932.  She continued to break many other records until she attempted her last, to be the first woman to fly around the world, in 1937.  She was last heard from flying near Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean.  Her plane was never found.

Calamity Jane

Martha Jane Cannary-"Calamity Jane" 1852-1903

Princeton, Missouri

As a young girl, Martha was orphaned and forced to move out West to Wyoming, South Dakota, and eventually, Montana.  There are many stories about Calamity Jane, most of which involve her as a generous, gun-slinging, drinking, wild-west type of woman.  Some stories are true, others exaggerated by writers of the time.  What we do know about her was her can do attitude and force during the Gold Rush in the West allowed her to be extremely successful.

Susan B. Anthony

Susan Brownell Anthony 1880-1906

Born in Adams, Massachusetts

Susan B. Anthony was a women's rights activist who worked for women's suffrage.  She co-founded the Women's Temperance Movement, as well as the women's rights journal, The Revolution.  She was even arrested for voting and took her case to the Supreme Court in 1872, which allowed her to spread her message even further.

Louisa May Alcott

Louisa May Alcott  1832-1888 

Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania

Louisa May Alcott was a writer.  She published her first book at age 22 in 1854, but is most famous for her book, Little Women.  Overall, she published over 30 books and stories during her life.
